The 12-Round Series Makes its Final Stop on the East Coast in 2013
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (August 7, 2013) - Following a weekend off, the 2013 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, returns to action this Saturday, August 10, with the Built Ford Tough Unadilla National. Held in New Berlin, N.Y., Unadilla's Round 10 serves as the final stop on the East Coast before heading west for the two culminating rounds of the championship.
For over 40 years, Unadilla has hosted premier motocross races and with this season's championships hitting the home stretch, the thousands of fans in attendance will be treated to an afternoon of high-intensity competition. Unadilla is considered hallowed ground in the sport of motocross, and thanks to the facility's rough terrain, high speed, and incredibly big air, it will be a fitting way to showcase the world's best riders with a full day of live television coverage on FUEL TV and NBC Sports Network.
With only three rounds remaining in the championship, Monster Energy Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto leads the way in the 450 Class with four overall victories and 12 moto wins to date. Last round marked the first time in 2013 that Villopoto hasn't won at least one moto per round. Instead, Villopoto's toughest challengers-James Stewart and Ryan Dungey-each enjoyed a moto win at Spring Creek, where Yoshimura Suzuki's Stewart captured his first overall victory of the season.
Red Bull KTM's Dungey sits just 34 points back of Villopoto in the 450 Class Championship as the series heads into the final stretch of racing. Dungey has had great success at Unadilla in the past; capturing victories in the 450 Class in 2010 and 2012, while Villopoto took the overall win in 2011.
Monroe, N.Y. native Justin Barcia will return to his home state this weekend with hopes of capturing his first victory of the season in front of hometown friends and family at Unadilla. Barcia has finished as high as second place overall in his first full season in the 450 Class, where he sits third overall in the championship standings.
GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac swept the last round at Spring Creek where he took over the 250 Class points lead for the first time this season. Previous points leader Ken Roczen went down in the first moto, leaving the Red Bull KTM rider to salvage a 35-2 moto score, losing valuable points in the championship chase. This Saturday, Tomac and Roczen will continue their hard fought battle for the 2013 title.
In 2012, Red Bull KTM's Marvin Musquin secured his first Lucas Oil Pro Motocross victory at Unadilla and he looks to repeat his success in the 250 Class once again this year. However, Musquin's overall victory in 2012 came by virtue of a 2-3 moto score, so the Frenchman has yet to win a moto in New York.
Tomac tops Roczen by 27 points in the 250 Class Championship with only three rounds to go in the series. Musquin holds third place in the standings with two overall wins under his belt.
Unadilla hosted a round of the inaugural Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship in 1972, and has been a part of the Nationals landscape ever since. It remains one of the most unique venues in the sport, thanks to its rolling hills and incredible natural terrain. It boasts a high-speed layout, yet is the site of notorious and awe-inspiring obstacles like Gravity Cavity, The Wall, and the Skyshot.
The Built Ford Tough Unadilla National will feature live coverage of the first set of motos on FUEL TV and Allisports.com beginning at 1 p.m. ET, followed by live coverage of the second motos on NBC Sports and Allisports.com, beginning at 3 p.m. ET.
