Skyler Howes Report from Epic Moto's Enduro Blast benefiting the Josh Frederick Foundation

Enduro Blast benefiting the Josh Frederick Foundation

Skyler Howes
Epic Moto
Shawn Strong called me up asking if I could teach a riding school the day before the race. Having co-instructed a DirtWise class with Shane Watts once before, I felt pretty stoked to teach my first class! It was a great turn out with a few of the MRAN mini riders on 65's and 50's and a couple of big bikes. Only having a 3 hour window, we focused a lot on mental prep and some basic skills like throttle, brake and clutch control, cornering and starts. All of the kids did great and showed some great improvement!
Race day!
The Epic Moto GP had a very late start at 3pm so I had a lot of time to prep and make sure everything was good to go. I spent most of the morning watching all of the quads and Colt Brinkerhoff tear it up! I also got the chance to ride around the course with Gunnar Townsend and the mini bikes for a couple laps! Finally, 3pm rolled around and we all lined up. I lined up far on the outside and waited for the gate. The gate dropped and I spun like crazy and was one of the last bikes off of the line. I kept my KTM 300XC pinned around the outside and railed the corner and surprisingly came out with the holeshot! I put my head down and really charged on. I hit the desert section and really put my bike to the test.
The Iron Mine desert loop is nothing but wide open straights with a few corners here and there. Of course my KTM 300 screamed and ran like corn through a goose! Blais Racing has built the best bike to ride and race on. Still proving their durability is same set of DirtTricks sprockets and Regina chain that I have run for this entire racing season with not one bit of wear showing. They continue to drive me and hold up to any abuse I put them through! Coming around to the "GP" section of the course which consists of flat slippery corners, I tracked perfectly and was able to get the power to the ground thanks to those awesome Kenda tires.
Back on the MX track, ESR and Race Tech have my suspension so dialed that it feels perfect no matter what condition I race on. I was able to throw down quick laps and get right to the Endurocross section and out back to the desert loop. Blasting through the desert loop again I started to gain on the lappers. I had to take some pretty sketchy lines and power through some chop or rough terrain. My RAD Mfg. wheels still prove their durability and hold to any abuse the desert has to offer! Especially through all of the braking and accelerating bumps, my Fast System 5 damper still holds loyal to me keeping me straight as an arrow through any rocks or chop.
Coming around on my final lap of the 1 hour long race, I was able to ride a flawless and mistake free race and come home with first overall Pro! I wouldn’t be able to do it with out the help of my sponsors, Blais Racing Services, Fasst Company, KTM, Torco Oil, ESR suspension, Race Tech, RAD Mfg, Freegun,  Alpinestars, Kenda, Pro Moto Billet, Fastway, FMF , Rekluse, HBD Motografx, Regina, TLD, BRP, Bullet Proof, DirtTricks, Eline, IMS, No Toil, Acerbis, Muscle Milk, Xbrand Goggles, A'ME Grips, TMFG Designs and Bike Week Radio.
