By Skyler Howes:
The first 8 or so miles were fire roads separated by a few fast/flowy trails. I
cruised, waving to the course workers and spectators and was having a great time.
As we came in to Hells Half Acre, the sand was super soft and I was just taking
it easy, rolling over the rocks nice and slow. All of the sudden, Tallon caught
me messing around and started pressuring me. I took an inside line that ended up
being blocked by a small barbed wire fence, I had to wheelie turn and go back around
on to the out side trail and this allowed Tallon to take the lead from me. I picked
back up my pace and was able to keep just in his dust as we exited Hells Half Acre
and back on to the fast trails. Back in to some washes, I closed the gap and coming
in to the pits I was around 10 seconds behind Tallon. A quick pit thanks to the
Jackrabbits M/C, Troy Guard and Tuffy Pearson and I was back on my way.
Tallon gained a bit on me by the time we got back on course but as we dropped back
in to the start wash (same 31 mile loop 3 times) I started gaining on him quick.
By staying just off of the main whooped out line, I stayed out of his dust and
saved my energy by not pounding those deep whoops. Just before the end of the wash,
I passed Tallon again and dropped onto the fire road where another bomb of dust
went off behind me. I took a sip out of my hydration system and checked out, charging
hard for this loop. After a couple of fire roads, I took a glance behind and couldn't
see a soul. I kept charging hard, picking off lappers and feeling great. I came
into the pits and Tuffy said that no one was even close (wondering what happened
to Tallon) regardless, I kept my pace and charged on. The 3rd loop got very choppy,
whooped out and torn up. A course of solid whoops, breaking bumps and chop is fun!
...... psyche! Really stoked on how great my bike handled through all of it, my
Fastway System 5 steering damper and ESR Suspension kept me straight and true through
all of the chop and rocks, which kept me relaxed. The lappers were crazy on loop
3; I appreciate all of the people that almost crashed trying to get out of the
way when I came up shouting. I am also sorry to those who I yelled at for trying
to defend your line. I respect your effort in the race and hats off to you for
holding your spot, even if I was yelling haha!
Coming back around on some fire roads, I saw Tallon on the side of the trail with
apparent bike problems. He gave me thumbs up and I charged on to the finish with
only having a couple small mistakes. One of which I really want to thank Alpinestar
boots and Asterisk knee braces for saving my leg. As I came down a rocky hill, a
large sage bush caught my foot, ripped it off of the foot peg and threw me around
side saddle on the bike. Luckily I was able to hang on and ride it out but if it
wasn't for those boots and knee braces, I don't think I would have made it out
alive!
Thank you to everyone that has been there and helped me achieve some great accomplishments!
I was able to end the day on my Blais Racing Services KTM 300XC with the overall
